Facebook Messenger is a popular instant messaging app from Facebook. Just like any other app, Messenger is prone to experiencing some problems with the devices to which it’s installed.
One of the most common issues experienced includes app crashing and freezing on different platforms. Others include no way of sending your messages; servers are offline, and nothing is functional when you open the app.
Facebook Messenger app is advanced now as compared to the initial software release. It allows you to have chats in groups, free voice calls, sending videos and pictures and as well as sending messages to people on your contact list.
Internet Connection Problems
For proper and great working of Facebook Messenger, you will need to have a good internet connection with high signal strength. This applies to both cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
If your connection is poor and slow in processing requests, it can lead to crashing of the app or freezing it.
If you access the internet through Wi-Fi, but it has issues and errors that may need attention, then consider doing either of the following:
- Switch your Wi-Fi off by activating the Airplane Mode.
- If Bluetooth is on, switch it off.
- Power off your device and router and then restart them again.
- You can choose other network connections to work with.
You need to close and stop Facebook Messenger app from running if you are to change and switch your internet connection.
The connection switch can be from cellular to Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi to 3G network. If you fail to close the app, it may crash when you are in the switching process.
Restart Your Phone
This can be your first-time choice when crashes become common or when Messenger does not respond. This will close all processes that work in the background which may be causing your phone to crash.
It will also increase the space available by freeing up memory space that had initially been clogged.
To reboot your Android device, press the power button and keep your finger holding in that position for some time. As a result, the Menu will display, and you can choose either to directly restart your phone tap on Power off and then restart.
This should make Messenger run smoothly. If this doesn’t solve the issue, then proceed to other available ways.
Delete Cache and Piled Up Data
When using Messenger quite often especially on a daily basis, the cache from the app will keep piling up and accumulate. Over some time, you will realize that the app has become slow in running, and sometimes crashes and freezes and this will be frequent.
This cause can be addressed by clearing the cache of piled up data on your device. This will solve the issues that result to “Facebook Messenger has stopped working” notifications.
To delete and clear cache data, follow these steps. On your Android device, open Settings. Proceed and click on Application Manager (which is Manage apps on some Android phones) and search for Facebook Messenger. Click on this app and from the many options on the window that results, click on Clear Cache.
Press the Force stop option that will stop the app in case it’s running in the background. Close the settings get back to your Home screen. Launch the app once again on from your Home screen.
If the step above did not fix the issue, you could choose to clear data. This will erase all the data Messenger has on you including the one on personal configuration. Thereby this option is a bit extreme than the previous one. You will need to have all your login details (username email or phone contact and password) before you proceed.
To clear Facebook Messenger app data, you will follow the steps outlined above on how to clear cache i.e. Settings>Application Manager>Facebook Messenger. You are to click on Clear data next and then on Force stop. This will be like you have just installed the app once again.
Free Up More Storage Space
Sufficient memory space is essential for proper and normal working of Messenger. You need to consider options that will give you much-needed space. You can opt to wipe out cache partition from your device or remove idle apps on your phone.
From the wiping cache partition, you will be able to recover more space initially occupied by temporary and junk files.
To clean cache partition, activate recovery mode on your phone. A certain set of keys need to be pressed for this to happen and that depends on the type of your phone. When you know the keys, switch off your device. Long press by holding onto the set of keys till Recovery menu displays.
Explore the Recovery mode using the Volume buttons and choose Wipe cache partition by tapping on Power button. When complete, keep exploring till you find and select the Reboot system with the Power Button.
To uninstall an app that you rarely use, go to Settings and click on Apps and select the tab on Downloaded. Navigate the different apps showing up and click on the app that needs to be removed.
Missing Messaging Chats on Messenger
Most Facebook Messenger users have reported this as among the most common problem likely to be encountered when using the app. If you have this issue on your device, then accessing any of your old or new messages will be impossible.
To fix this issue, you will need to have your messenger cache cleared. You will do so by following the steps outlined below.
Check the status of Facebook Messenger and ensure that it’s not running in the background. This will stop new cache from being added to your device as Messenger checks for the newest updates. Proceed to open Settings and click on Application Manager. You will then see all your downloaded and installed apps here, and you should locate Facebook Messenger in here.
On opening the Messenger app, a page containing details on the app will display. Scrolling down through this page, you will come across the buttons with ‘Clear Cache’ and ‘Clear Data’ then you should click on in that order. After this is complete, Messenger will download new data. For the clearing cache, you can apply third-party apps that clear cache on a regular basis such as the Android Assistant.
Using Messenger with Other Apps
When running other Facebook Messenger, you need to limit the number of other apps that are also running. This will be dependent on the storage space in your device and its processing speed.
An app needs some RAM to work smoothly and to open too many apps consumes most of the memory thereby making Messenger crash or freeze.
Messenger App, not Working Appropriately
The messenger app can stop working due to a couple of issues. In most cases, it’s due to an attack of the software by a virus, or maybe it needs an update. These two issues can be addressed either by deleting and reinstalling the messenger app or an update to it respectively.
It’s important to understand that installing both the Facebook app and Facebook Messenger app on your device makes the messaging app to work properly. Follow the steps below to fix these two issues.
In the case of Android devices, go to Google Play Store and access its menu by clicking on the top left button. Proceed to the section on My App and look for Facebook Messenger app. If your software is outdated, the next window offers you the option of updating it, and you need to update it as necessary.
